For this project, we were challenged with relocating Flo Skate park in Nottingham in to a derelict, heritage, Great Northern Railway depot. The building was in disrepair with only the exterior four walls remaining. Flo is a charity organisation and this relocation would be funded through donations. We initially designed a temporary intervention which would provide the skate park with a temporary urban structure which affordable and a taster for a more developed permanent skate park.

The second part to this project was to design an urban skate park inside a heritage building taking on board the planned development of the brownfield site surrounding. My approach was to maintain the grunge-y, escapism feeling of traditional skateboarding but also respect the history of the building. My design should not leave an permanent damage to the original structure.

My project strategy focused on introducing an internal courtyard and utilizing natural daylight as much as possible. My internal courtyard was designed using the bearing of Nottingham's Market Square and Sneinton Market, two key urban areas in Nottingham. These angles are utilized throughout the design and direct the shape of the voids which run the whole way through the skatepark.
