This masterclass allowed me to focus on detailed connections within my heritage intervention project linked here.

The primary structure with my design were steel beams and columns to support the new roof and internal courtyard structure. To enhance this design element, I focused on the column to beam connection by studying tectonics. My primary precedent study for this work was by Carlo Scarpa, as seen in the research booklet below.

I developed my connection and continued the design through to other elements such as the banister/railings and floor details. This projects was finally illustrated by a composite drawing, inspired by Carlo Scarpa, a research booklet showing a diary of work and any research undertaken, four final technical drawings and a sketch model.

My composite drawing demonstrates my journey through this project, showing initial to final sketches.

research booklet

I designed the layout go my research book around Carlo Scarpa's style of composite drawings. Whenever he designed, Carlo Scarpa would draw and sketch all of his ideas on one sheet of paper essentially. This was a common theme in all of his works. To embrace his style, I made sure that all my development work was illustrated in a composite style and therefore every page in my research booklet has an eclectic, collage presentation. I really enjoyed working and sketching through composite drawings as it increased my productivity as ideas flowed more freely from my head to paper.
